What Do Baby Doves Eat

What Do Baby Doves Eat?

Baby doves are most often fed by their mothers from the moment they hatch. If a baby is still with its mother, she will feed it pre-digest seeds that she regurgitates for her babies to eat. If the baby has been abandoned or if you have no other option, commercial bird formulas are a good choice.

As a bird owner myself, I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to turn to hand-feeding our little ones. Some species of birds abandon their young much more on a whim than others, sometimes they can die in an accident or be injured and the baby is left for dead.

And sometimes it’s just fun to nurture a baby bird by hand because of the bond it creates with you.

Whichever situation is the case for you, then you will need to feed it commercial baby bird formulas from a syringe if you intend on saving the little one’s life.

Hand-feeding birds is a skill every bird owner should know. And if you don’t know it, You should pick it up. This article won’t go into too much detail about that, But keep a lookout for when I add a dedicated page for it! Or just check out a search engine.

The first thing you will need is a feeding syringe. These can be found in any pet store and are very inexpensive, we just want to make sure it’s clean so use soap and water or some other cleaning agent that says safe for animals. The next step would be filling the syringe with bird formula which should be done according to the instructions on the package. We recommend some of the better baby parrot (it’s fine for doves) food at the bottom of the article.

One of the first things to keep in mind when hand-feeding a baby is not to overfeed it, This may lead to aspiration and serious health issues for your little one. It’s important that you give them only what they can eat at once and wait until they have finished before giving them more.

If you’re finding it difficult to get the dove to open her mouth, Don’t force it. Simply put a tiny bit of pressure on the side of her beak and she will open wide for you.

She might just be hesitant, But you should also make sure the food isn’t too cold (or too hot!). It should be about 105F, but be sure to read the instructions on the package. Baby doves won’t eat cold food.

There is enough water in the baby food mixture, So do not give her more. It’s not good for her.

She will need to be fed every two to three hours. Her crop should be full, if it’s empty, it means she’s hungry. Baby birds need a lot of food to grow big and strong.

At a certain point, she will be old enough to start eating seeds, vegetables, and fruit all on her own. You should encourage this behavior. Just make sure she’s old enough. The age at which birds start to eat solid food varies species by species, So if you know what kind of dove you have, you should look it up online. (This goes for pretty much every bird, not just doves).

In most cases, it should be pretty obvious and instinct should kick in regardless.

If this is a wild bird, Once she’s old enough to start pecking her own food and to fly around, it’s time to let her go back into the wild.

If this is a pet bird, then it’s time to find her a suitable bird cage home sweet home.

Remember, Little birds like to be warm, let her snuggle under your chin as you feed her. This will increase the bond between you and her, and it’s just so lovely.
