TL;DR for skimmers:

Make sure your feeder has new seeds, no mold. Spread seeds around the bottom of the feeder on the ground at first. Make sure the feeder is the appropriate size for your local bird’s beaks. Make sure cats and other predators can’t get to it, Birds won’t feed if they don’t feel safe. That’s the gist of it, Read more below for other things you can do to attract birds to the feeder!

Birds tend to be fairly picky. Anything from slightly wet seed to a dirty feeder will keep them away from where you want them to be.

It’s important you always replace the old seed with fresh ones every 4 days to 1 week so there is a fresh supply of feed for the birds. Moldy seeds will also discourage them from visiting your feeder, as they will remember it in the future too. It’s also important to make sure they have plenty of room on the platform.

I used to have a platform that was simply too small for my larger local birds to perch, and that made it undesirable for them to eat there.

In that example, it was an easy fix for me, All I had to do was give them a bigger perch!

Remember, at the end of the day, your competing with everyone elses’ bird feeders for the same birds. If you want to win some bird loyalty, give them what they want and what they deserve.

Adding additional bird-friendly things around the feeder is also very beneficial. One of the best features I’ve discovered that helps with attracting more birds to my feeders is a birdbath and bird water fountain.

Speaking of pests, And predators, It’s important to keep your bird feeder away from all of them or the birds simply won’t feel safe enough to show up.

No bird wants to be in the danger zone of a cat or dog, or even other predator birds.

While keeping that in mind, keep a wide and open space surrounding it so that everyone can enjoy it and the birds don’t feel backed into a corner.

If you have predators or pests as we do, how about giving them some of their own food? That way they’ll be too full from all this yummy goodness and leave your birds and bird feeders alone!

This will keep them busy. As for the cats, Well, It’s typically not a good idea to feed your local wild cat population… IS WHAT A HEARTLESS MONSTER WOULD SAY!

I’m joking of course, but just bear in mind, if you feed predators, expect predators.

And, as always when dealing with animal feeders and baths, Do not use harsh chemicals. Even IF you manage to get rid of all the chemical residue (which is terrible for them) the smell may remain and deter animals from coming around.

Playing a bit of calming bird music you find on youtube isn’t a terrible idea either. Rushing water and fountain sounds are things birds just love. Tranquil for you too.
